Melodeo Announces Mobilcast Network; Expands Affiliate Program, Adds SMS Option for Mobilcast Installs
"Podcasts are a natural for mobile phones. With Mobilcast Network Melodeo is bringing this incredibly democratic form of media to the most widely used consumer device on the planet. I think podcast creators and listeners are really going to like this," said Chris Pirillo, host of the Chris Pirillo Show.
“And we'll make it even easier next month when we incorporate short codes, letting consumers send us an SMS to start the download process.”
Podcast creators can use Mobilcast Network to add their podcast to Mobilcast and become a Mobilcast Affiliate. Mobilcast Affiliates help evangelize mobilcasting by making their podcasts available to consumers using Mobilcast, distributing the Mobilcast client over their web site, and promoting it within their podcasts.
"MuggleCast has 70,000 listeners, and we expect that number to go up with the release of the fourth Harry Potter movie. We are counting on Mobilcast to help us increase that number," said Andrew Sims of MuggleNet, the leading Harry Potter fan site. "We became a Mobilcast Affiliate because we think mobilcasting is a great way to increase our listener base."
Mobilcast Network also includes information to help podcasters create mobilcasts, podcasts created and optimized specifically for mobile phones. Melodeo works closely with leading podcasters to develop guidance for mobilcasting. By publishing this information it hopes to create a broad selection of mobilcasts to complement the podcasts currently being listened to on the phone.
Mobilcast installation has been made even simpler. Listeners can go to Mobilcast Network and download Mobilcast via SMS. Consumers enter their mobile phone number on a web a form and receive a SMS message with the download URL. Selecting the URL in the SMS message starts the download. This simplified download enables consumers to more quickly start listening to podcasts on their mobile phones.
"Mobilcast listeners have told us they wanted a simpler download experience. It made sense to use something consumers are familiar with -- SMS," said Bill Valenti, Melodeo Executive Vice President and Mobilcast Maestro. "And we'll make it even easier next month when we incorporate short codes, letting consumers send us an SMS to start the download process."
