Applied Thin Films, Inc. Announces New Government Contracts for Advancing Cerablak(TM) Technology at NanoCommerce & SEMI NanoForum

Applied Thin Films Inc. (ATFI), a privately held company developing nanoscale-designed ceramic materials and thin films, announced today at NanoCommerce & SEMI NanoForum that it has received government contracts valued over $3M over a period of three years with Department of Defense being the primary sponsor. These projects are targeted toward advancement of ATFI's patented flagship product, Cerablak(TM), which is a nanoscale-designed ceramic material based on aluminum phosphate compositions. Under a contract from the Navy, ATFI will develop next-generation radome material based on Cerablak(TM)'s superior dielectric properties for missile systems capable of hypersonic flight. Under a recently concluded Phase I SBIR Navy contract, ATFI has demonstrated feasibility of using Cerablak(TM) as a protective coating for exhaust components of the Joint Strike Fighter. Continued funding of this effort is expected. In addition, ATFI has received a contract valued at about $250K from the Department of Army to explore the use of Cerablak(TM) for Small Arms Weapon Systems targeted towards increased reliability and durability in harsh environments.

Among recent developments, ATFI has expanded its Cerablak(TM) product offering to include a novel form of thermally-stable glass microspheres. Based on Cerablak(TM)'s nanocomposite architecture, these microspheres contain nanosized carbon inclusions encapsulated in an aluminum phosphate matrix that imparts durable high emissivity properties. Under a recent NASA Phase II SBIR project, Cerablak(TM) nanocomposites were used to develop thermal protection systems for space vehicle systems. "Based on Cerablak(TM)'s multifunctional nature and diverse forms enabled by chemistry at the nanoscale, we are designing highly innovative application concepts around this unique platform technology," noted Kimberly Steiner, Research Scientist and a Principal Investigator of key projects at ATFI.
