Austin's Historic Pier Forced to Find New Home or Close; Pier Today... Gone Tomorrow
In March, developers purchased the four-acre site located off Bee Caves Road and presented the current owners, Mike Walsh, Larry Spector and Alan Cameron, with a notice to terminate the existing six-year lease by September 30.
“We want as many people as possible to experience this Austin landmark.”
"We hoped the new developers would preserve this Austin institution," Spector said. "While they have declined our initial offer to operate under the existing name, we are optimistic that they will reconsider. In the meantime, to keep the legend alive, we are scouting new locations, one of which is on Lake Austin."
"Many of our patrons have made The Pier their meeting place for generations," added Walsh, managing partner. "It is not uncommon to see children and grandchildren of early customers now coming as regulars. The live music, food, view of Lake Austin and relaxing environment seem to call them back."
Walsh said the owners plan to "end with a bang" and have lined up some big names for the last two months in the current location. "We want as many people as possible to experience this Austin landmark."
Among the acts slated for August and September are Leon Russell, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Walsh also hinted that Willie Nelson may appear for the grand finale.
Alan Cameron, who joined Spector and Walsh as a partner in 2004, said he bought his interest in The Pier because it had character and a flavor unlike the many trendy "California" style clubs/restaurants opening in Austin.
The Pier originally operated as a fishing lodge in 1928 and later served as a speakeasy during Prohibition. After operating under names such as Roger Billies, Mack's Marina and Jimmy's Fishing Camp, it was dubbed "The Pier" in 1958. Walsh purchased the business in 1981 and operated it as a restaurant and outdoor venue for Austin artists.
Many of Austin's singer/songwriter greats such as Bob Schneider, Monte Montgomery, The Resentments, Jimmy Lefave, Toni Price and People's Choice have performed regularly at The Pier. In addition, the club has booked national acts such as Hal Ketchum, Percy Sledge and Rick Trevino.
