Samuel Adams(R) Celebrates American Beer Month with a Beer of ''Extreme'' Proportions -- Samuel Adams Utopias(R); An Extraordinarily Strong Beer In a Limited-Edition Collectible Brew Kettle
Since 2002, Samuel Adams Utopias, a 25 percent alcohol by volume beer, has been recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records(1) as the "strongest beer in the world." To the delight of beer connoisseurs, Samuel Adams brewers are bringing back this beer after two years of work to take the complexity and flavor to the next level.
“At Samuel Adams our passion for pushing the envelope of traditional brewing techniques and rewriting the rules of beer making shines through with the re-release of Samuel Adams Utopias”
The growing popularity surrounding the extreme-beer movement, which Samuel Adams pioneered starting in 1994 with Samuel Adams Triple Bock, includes diverse, finely crafted varieties brewed in small batches that surprise the palates of both beer lovers and appreciators of fine wine and spirits. Extreme beers have a lot in common with collectible ports, fine wines and whiskeys, because they age well and are often limited in distribution.
"At Samuel Adams our passion for pushing the envelope of traditional brewing techniques and rewriting the rules of beer making shines through with the re-release of Samuel Adams Utopias," says Jim Koch, Founder of The Boston Beer Company and Brewer of Samuel Adams beers. "My goal with Utopias is to raise beer drinkers' expectations of beer, and to break the boundaries of what people traditionally think of as beer and brew a beer comparable to the finest cognacs and ports in the world. There is no better time to do this, than during American Beer Month in July, when beer-lovers across the nation are celebrating quality American beer."
For the 2005 edition, the brewers hand selected some of the world's best single-use bourbon casks from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. The oak barrels were used to age Samuel Adams Utopias in, which provide the brew with a new flavor dimension and more complexity than the 2003 release. The final recipe is a blend of casks up to eleven years old. Buffalo Trace Distillery is the only distillery to win more than 115 medals and awards since 1990, and is the first American distillery to be named "Distiller of the Year" by Whisky Magazine.
The Samuel Adams Utopias 2005 edition continues to amaze beer drinker's palates. With a rich and elegant taste that is surprisingly light on the palate, Utopias features an intense, flavorful, slightly fruity flavor, and offers the distinct notes of cinnamon, vanilla and maple. The brewers recommend serving at room temperature (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit) in two-ounce servings.
Koch, who pioneered the extreme brewing movement, began experimenting with extreme brewing over 11 years ago and since then has held the record for the strongest beers in the world, first with Samuel Adams(R) Triple Bock (17.5 percent), followed by Samuel Adams(R) Millennium Ale (21 percent), Samuel Adams Utopias MMII(R) (24 percent) and most recently Samuel Adams Utopias(R) (25 percent). This batch is a culmination of all of these extreme beers from over the years.
In 2003, F. Paul Pacult, editor of Spirit Journal and one of the world's leading authorities on spirits, gave the 2003 edition of Samuel Adams Utopias a Classic rating (96-100), the highest rating recommendation for a spirit. "Samuel Adams Utopias offers a semisweet aroma of fruit and honey with tastes of toffee, molasses and dark coffee," said Pacult. (F. Paul Pacult, "Beer." Wine Enthusiast, November 2003).
"Samuel Adams Utopias 2005 is a one-of-kind ale that not only redefines the Strong Ale and Extreme Beer categories, but charts new territory for all grain-based libations," commented Pacult. "It is unexpected that a brewer is willing to put his beer up against an array of fine spirits, but by punching through the established parameters of high alcohol ale, Utopias presents us with a truly unique way to compare the flavor and richness of an elegant-tasting beer. Utopias is a beverage that years from now may be looked upon as a trailblazing pioneer."
Brewed with hand crafted care and precision, Samuel Adams Utopias uses traditional brewing ingredients including three types of Noble hops that are among the finest available, Spalt Spalter, Hallertau Mittlefruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, which add a slightly earthy, slightly spicy taste. Beyond the fine Noble hops, Samuel Adams Utopias features ingredients that truly set it apart from other varieties of beer. Samuel Adams Utopias contains Crystal Malt for its rich amber color, as well as Two-Row Moravian and Bamberg Smoked Malts. It also possesses several different types of yeast including a variety normally reserved for champagne.
Jim Koch brews his full flavored Samuel Adams beer with hand-crafted care and precision, closely monitoring the quality and ingredients used, as well as using an extended aging process. He uses the same recipe and traditional brewing methods that his great great grandfather used in the mid 1800s. Now, heading a small, independent brewery, Jim makes brewing decisions based on quality and taste, not on costs. In fact, only the finest ingredients from around the world are gathered for his brews and he travels to Bavaria every year to hand-select some of the world's best Noble hops. Having founded The Boston Beer Company in 1984, Jim continues his pursuit of the best beer that can be brewed.
"At Samuel Adams we are passionate about brewing quality, one-of-a-kind beer that amazes beer lovers and aficionados alike," said Koch. "We are always striving to create the perfect beer, the utopia of beer."
