Telcordia researchers will work with scientists from the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), which hosts the ITC's R&D Centers to develop next-generation technologies in the areas of wireless communications, multimedia content management and collaboration, security, telematics and RFID enabling systems. Developments from the research will help advance the technological growth of the burgeoning Hong Kong region and contribute to the global transformation of the information networking and communications industry.
"This collaboration is a natural progression in Telcordia's expansion as a global leader in the communications industry," said Adam Drobot, senior vice president, Applied Research for Telcordia. "This partnership creates an opportunity for the company to maximize the success of existing relationships and expand upon strategic R&D efforts in one of the largest and fastest growing technology centers and communications markets in the world."
One of the goals for the R&D Center Program is to facilitate commercial uptake of research by acting as a focal point for conducting industry-oriented R&D and providing platforms for adoption and commercialization of research deliverables. The primary objective is to leverage and respond to the growing demand for innovation and advanced technologies from the tens of thousands of manufacturers in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China. Known as the "World's Factory," the PRD, has 80,000 factories employing more than 15 million workers. Advanced information networking and emerging communication technology developments made from the R&D centers will help enable manufacturers to upgrade their capabilities from Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to Original Design Manufacturer (ODM).
As part of the agreement, intellectual property and other developments coming out of the joint research collaboration may be incorporated into Telcordia's Elementive portfolio of solutions and licensed to partners to meet the ever-evolving requirements of service providers around the world. Operations at the center are expected to commence in the fall of 2005.
