Linux Email Leader Scalix Tackles Email Administration Complexity with New Release Announced Today
-- Scalix 9.2, a LinuxWorld Product Excellence Finalist, Also Extends Calendaring Features in Scalix Web Access, the Industry's Most Powerful Web Messaging Interface for Mozilla, Firefox and Internet Explorer
Scalix Corporation, known for its richly-featured and highly reliable email and calendaring platform on Linux, today announced a new release of its software designed to improve the productivity of email administrators. Scalix 9.2 gives administrators a browser-based graphical interface that delivers anytime, anywhere point-and-click administration for email installation, administration and management.
"With Scalix 9.2, we've combined the ease of use of a graphical user interface with the power of the Linux platform to give email administrators a visual way to manage the installation, troubleshooting, upgrades and management of email," said Julie Hanna Farris, Scalix's founder and chief strategy officer. "The result is a web administration console that saves time in performing repetitive tasks and reduces complexity in email management."
Scalix 9.2, announced at LinuxWorld Boston today, includes a browser-based Scalix Administration Console which adds capabilities for managing server processes, messaging queues and default settings. Previous releases of Scalix Administration Console offered a visual capability for creating and modifying users, groups and distribution lists. Using popular browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox, administrators can now securely manage the global messaging environment, including multiple independent email servers, from any location.
The expanded visual capabilities of the Scalix Administration Console complement the power and flexibility of Scalix's command line and scripting interfaces. "Now everyone can be productive with the interface of their choice," said Farris.
"We chose Scalix for its rich end-user functionality, which has greatly increased productivity among our employees," said David Cawthorne, the IT manager on the Scalix project for the town and schools of Weymouth, Mass. "With this new release, Scalix has delivered additional advantages to those of us on the front line of email management. We expect the enhancements to the browser-based administration console will reduce the time and complexity associated with email management."
Also new in Scalix 9.2 is the intuitive Scalix Installation Wizard which ensures fail proof installations in less than an hour. The Scalix Installation Wizard guides administrators through a variety of diagnostic and installation steps to ensure the correct versions of required system components are properly installed and configured. If the requirements are not met, the Scalix Installation Wizard assists the administrator in assembling and installing the required Linux packages.
"The market opportunity for Linux-based email alternatives is potentially significant," said Matt Cain, senior vice president of META Group. "The criteria for success include rich client functionality, interoperability with existing messaging environments and ease of administration."
In addition to graphical email administration, Scalix 9.2 also extends the calendaring capabilities of its cross-platform Scalix Web Access email client. "Advanced calendaring and scheduling functionality, previously the exclusive domain of powerful desktop clients like Microsoft Outlook, are now available in Scalix Web Access on multiple desktop and browser platforms," said Farris. Advanced features include real-time free/busy calendar lookup and a highly interactive graphical interface.
According to a recent study by Osterman Research, over 80% of IT directors would consider switching to a web-based email client if it had the same functionality as current desktop clients. Adding advanced calendaring capabilities, along with the rich desktop-like functionality already found in Scalix Web Access, gives Scalix email users the full desktop productivity they need when they are on the road. "With these latest enhancements, Scalix offers the most powerful email and calendaring web client on the market, bar none," said Farris.
Scalix 9.2 will be demonstrated at the company's booth 1806 at LinuxWorld Boston from February 15-17, 2005.
