John Crane Announces New Cartridge Split Seal Featuring Simple Installation, Superior Sealing Reliability and High Performance Wet or Dry Running Capabilities

MORTON GROVE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--John Crane -- the world's leading supplier of engineered sealing systems and associated products -- has announced the launch of a unique sealing solution that meets the design requirements for wet-running and dry-running services with one common seal platform.

“Based on a common platform with only a few component and material differences, the Type 3740 wet-running and the Type 3740D dry-running split seals offer a simplified design for fast and easy installation by virtually anyone”

John Crane recently introduced the new Type 3740 Cartridge Split Seal, the latest and most advanced split seal product to join John Crane’s existing split seal product portfolio. This new seal is available in two variations -- the Type 3740 for wet-running and the Type 3740D for dry-running services. The Type 3740 wet-running split seals incorporate key features to ensure fast and easy seal installation, while providing reliable seal performance in demanding pump and other rotating equipment fluid services. The Type 3740D dry-running split seal is designed for the large shaft run-out and harsh operating conditions commonly associated with top-entry vessel mixing services and other dry-running applications. Typical wet-running equipment applications will include pumps and side-entry agitators, while the dry-running version will be for top-entry mixers and other dry environment sealing services that frequently have large levels of shaft runout as well.

The new seal family features a minimum number of factory, pre-assembled components that will make installation fast and easy, even by those with minimal split seal training and installation skills, ensuring a long and reliable service life. The robust Type 3740 performance capabilities will also allow more difficult services to be sealed with a split seal than ever before. In fact, the Type 3740 wet-running split seal can successfully operate in services up to 450 psig and withstand shaft run-outs of up to 0.060-inches TIR, while the Type 3740D dry-running split seal can handle pressures from vacuum conditions, up to 80 psig and even greater shaft run-outs of up to 0.150-inches TIR.

According to Tom Evans, John Crane Market Manager, the Type 3740 Cartridge Split Seal product line was developed to incorporate the latest John Crane split seal features, technology and capabilities available for wide appeal in the process industry marketplace. Features include:

  • Factory-preassembled rotor assembly for fast and easy, yet precise rotating face installation
  • Separate stationary seal face for visual assurance the halves are correctly aligned
  • Factory-preassembled gland plate assembly for easy, single-step installation
  • Balanced primary ring design for increased pressure capability
  • Captive socket head cap screws to eliminate lost or dropped screws
  • Same-side screws on all hardware for easy access and faster installation
  • Dovetail O-ring grooves to contain all O-rings without requiring adhesives
  • Fast and easy field repair kits that do not require special tools, adhesives or procedures
  • Large shaft run out capabilities for both the wet-running and dry-running versions
  • High pressure ratings for wider split seal applications

“Based on a common platform with only a few component and material differences, the Type 3740 wet-running and the Type 3740D dry-running split seals offer a simplified design for fast and easy installation by virtually anyone,” said Evans. “The Type 3740 split seal family offers operating limits that cover a broad spectrum of services, enabling a single plant or mill the opportunity to benefit from the latest technology for both their wet and dry-running rotating equipment from a single product line.”
