California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools Awards $20,000 in Scholarships to California Students
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The California Association of Private Postsecondary Schools (CAPPS) announced the recipients of the association’s Memorial Scholarship Program during its 24th Annual Conference.
The CAPPS’ Cosmetology, Esthetics, or Massage (CEM) Scholarship was awarded to Elizabeth Covey and Jennifer Mawn, students at the Poway Academy of Hair Design, with each receiving $5,000 towards their ongoing education. The CEM Scholarship was created in memory of past CAPPS Board of Directors President Bonnie Manley, who passed away in 2005. Bonnie was on the CAPPS Board of Directors until 2003 and the owner of Beauty Boutique Inc., which includes several Beauty Schools in the San Diego area.
CAPPS’ Allied Health Scholarship was awarded to Christina Landa, a respiratory therapy student at San Joaquin Valley College and Melissa Marinella, an LVN student at Lake College in Redding; both students received $5,000 towards their education. The CAPPS Allied Health Scholarship was established in memory of Sue Fleming, who started as a student at Western Career College (WCC), and rose through the ranks to become Director of the Main WCC Campus. Sue was an inspiration to her students and fellow staff.
“We are pleased to award these scholarships through the generosity of our members who support students both at their own schools and through our association,” said Robert Johnson, CAPPS Executive Director. “These students have shown exceptional leadership, high aspirations and a strong drive to succeed – we commend them.”
The 2008 CAPPS Memorial Scholarship Program was made possible through the generous donations of: Pearson Learning Solutions, Colleen and Jim Buffington – CNI College, Lynelle Lynch – Poway Academy of Hair Design, Sabrina Kay – Fremont College, Gary Yasuda – Milan Institute, Western Career College, Greg Nathanson, and Dorothy Metcalfe – Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.
