Dakim Posts Demo Exercises for [m]Power Cognitive Fitness System, First Product to Help Seniors Combat Memory Loss & Dementia

Used by Over 130 Senior Living Communities; Home Unit Due in January

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dakim Inc. announced today that it has posted sample exercises from its [m]Power Cognitive Fitness System online at www.dakim.com to illustrate its innovative approach to helping seniors protect themselves against dementia. Dakims [m]Power® - developed in conjunction with prominent experts on brain health and aging is now used by over 130 senior living communities and will be available in a home edition in early 2009.

The demo clips show examples of [m]Power games for seniors who represent a range of ability from high-functioning to mildly impaired and suffering from dementia. Examples range from an activity called Keep Your Eyes Open that shows a Jimmy Stewart movie clip and poses follow-up questions to exercise short-term memory, to a simple story called Spruce Goose for lower-functioning users that centers around the controversial wooden aircraft that aviator/industrialist Howard Hughes built and flew in 1947.

The entertaining multimedia format, use of cultural references from seniors past, a touch screen interface with no mouse or keyboard, and friendly voiceovers that both explain the exercise and provide encouragement - even if users give the wrong answers - distinguish the Dakim [m]Power from all other brain fitness programs on the market.

The system is also the first to provide frequent exercise updates as well as to self-adjust the level of challenge for ability levels ranging from active seniors to early-stage Alzheimers patients. All features were specifically designed to encourage the sustained use determined to be essential to using cognitive exercise to combat memory loss.

This emphasis on keeping users engaged over the long term was driven by numerous medical research studies showing that consistent, ongoing mental stimulation plays a key role in reducing the risk of dementia. One 21-year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded the risk can be lowered by as much as 63%. Researchers link these results to the fact that these activities build a cognitive reserve that can help compensate for brain aging.

Each 20- to 30-minute [m]Power session exercises short- as well as long-term memory, critical thinking, visuospatial ability, calculation and language for a thorough brain workout. Activities incorporate the most current neuroscientific and gerontological knowledge about strengthening brain function.

The Dakim [m]Power can be used by most seniors without caregiver assistance because of the touch screen interface and the systems ability to self-adjust the level of challenge to match users mental capacity as they play. The one-piece unit and online updates also simplify use of the [m]Power by eliminating the need for software installation by care providers or home users.
