Overture Networks Embraces Environmental Responsibility

Carrier Ethernet Solutions Provider Takes Big Steps to Reduce Its Environmental Impact with New Packaging and “Green” Program Expansion

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Overture Networks, the industry’s trusted Carrier Ethernet solutions provider, has announced several initiatives that the company has implemented as part of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. New packaging, smarter use of resources and increased support for its customers’ own energy-reduction efforts are just a few of the ways Overture Networks is “going green.”

Overture Networks has unveiled a new environmentally friendly packaging solution for its ISG product line that is lighter, smaller and creates less waste. The new NEBS-compliant packaging is entirely Styrofoam-free and uses at least 30% recycled materials, with 30% less overall volume than previous packaging. The streamlined boxes, which now weigh 7% less, allow Overture Networks to pack 40% more units on each pallet, reducing transportation costs and the energy needed to deliver its product line. The company has done away with electro-static discharge bags as well, using the recycled plastic in the packaging itself for electro-static control. In addition, Overture Networks has eliminated in-box paper documentation, which can instead be downloaded quickly and easily from the company’s website.

Overture Networks has extended its environmental-impact reduction efforts beyond its packaging process, bringing its green program into nearly every aspect of the business. Its latest Carrier Ethernet aggregation system, the ISG 6000, introduced in October 2008, boasts 80% reduced power consumption over previous solutions, allowing Overture’s customers to increase their energy-reduction efforts as well.

“Many of our service provider customers are asking for timelines on increases in energy efficiency and decreases in power consumption,” said Chip Redden, vice president of marketing and product management for Overture Networks. “We decided to invest engineering resources now and stay ahead of the demand.”

The company has long had a comprehensive recycling program for both its office and industrial waste, and, during its recent expansion into new office space, Overture had switches installed that automatically turn off the lights in unoccupied rooms. In addition, Overture encourages a company culture of efficiency and environmental awareness, and supports telecommuting for even its most local staff.

“Overture Networks’ green program enables us to accomplish a number of important objectives: most importantly, to reduce the impact Overture Networks has on the environment and help our customers meet their goals for energy and cost reduction,” said Nour Eddine Derouiche, vice president of operations for Overture Networks. “We are also able to do this while reducing our own costs, improving our distribution, transport, waste management and energy and employee efficiency efforts. It’s simply a win-win-win situation—one that we’ll continue to improve upon whenever possible.”
