Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Announces Promotions

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) today announced that Scott Sowell has been promoted to vice president, operational excellence; Marty O’Reilly has been promoted to director, operational excellence; Suzy Mortenson has been promoted to director, finance; Cynthia Telles has been promoted to director, internal audit; Scott Mack has been promoted to director, actuarial services; and Kathryn Mattson has been promoted to director, individual sales.

Sowell previously was director of health services for BCBSAZ. He joined BCBSAZ in 2004, bringing a strong management background in process improvement and workflow analysis. Under Sowell’s leadership, the operational excellence team will focus on continually improving BCBSAZ’s processes and service delivery to customers.

O’Reilly previously was senior manager of business development. In her 21 years with BCBSAZ, she has had a major influence in improving processes and guiding significant corporate projects. In her new role, O’Reilly will play a leadership role in identifying opportunities for greater organizational efficiency.

Mortenson previously was senior manager of financial reporting and purchasing. She began her career with BCBSAZ in 1985 and has served the finance department in many capacities, most recently having been instrumental in helping BCBSAZ reach its corporate finance goals and oversee regulatory compliance, influence she will continue in her role as director.

Telles previously was senior manager of internal audit. She started her career with BCBSAZ 12 years ago after working in the State of Arizona Office of the Auditor General. In her new role, Telles will lead a team of operational, financial, compliance and IT auditors.

Mack previously was senior manager of actuarial services. He joined the BCBSAZ actuarial department in 1989. As senior manager, Mack provided strong technical expertise to BCSBAZ management. In his new position, he will play a critical role in continuing the company’s growth and attaining actuarial goals.

Mattson previously was senior manager in sales, where her demonstration of leadership and strategic thinking played a major role in the company’s accomplishments. In her new role, she will be responsible for formulating and implementing strategies to achieve sales and membership objectives that aim to increase access to health insurance for individuals in Arizona.
