Allegheny Energy Safety Team Earns Honors in International Competition
GREENSBURG, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Allegheny Energy, Inc. (NYSE: AYE) announced today that a safety improvement team comprised of Allegheny employees earned finalist honors in the 2009 International Team Excellence Award competition.
The American Society for Quality sponsors the annual Team Excellence competition to showcase the best quality processes. Following a preliminary cut, nearly 30 teams from eight different countries made presentations before a panel of judges.
“It’s great to see our employees’ accomplishments being acknowledged – particularly when the results mean fewer injuries to our co-workers,” said Paul J. Evanson, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Allegheny Energy. “We’re thrilled that our employees’ skills and our business performance are right up there with the best global companies. The team’s work reinforces Allegheny’s high performance culture.”
Allegheny Power’s entry focused on a safety team’s initiative to reduce the number of repeat injuries to employees. Process improvements implemented as part of the program resulted in a 65-percent decrease in injuries for the targeted employee group.
The safety improvement initiative supports Allegheny’s ongoing efforts to create an injury free workplace. From 2004 to 2008, Allegheny Power reduced the number of injuries by close to 70 percent. During that period, the company also achieved first-quartile safety performance for the first time in its history.
