‘Retail Prophet’ Douglas Stephens to Speak at PRSM Conference
Stephens Will Explore the Purpose of the Retail Store of Tomorrow
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The retail store will continue to grow in importance, says industry futurist Douglas Stephens, but it will have less to do with distributing the product and will increasingly play a larger role in providing an experience with the brand. Stephens will explain his predictions on the exciting future of the retail store at the Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM) Mid-Year Conference in Columbus, Ohio, early next month.
“There is a set of hyperactive variables which are currently reshaping the shopping experience; mixed use as an overall development trend; the adoption of omni-channel technologies for some shoppers and the intrusion of online sales.”
According to Stephens, “There is a set of hyperactive variables which are currently reshaping the shopping experience; mixed use as an overall development trend; the adoption of omni-channel technologies for some shoppers and the intrusion of online sales.” But the summation of all these forces at work, Stephens says, is the fact that the store is no longer serving its age-old purpose, that of the main or only distribution channel for the merchandise.
A couple of factors contributed to that sea change, Stephens explained, and they occurred right around the same point in time. The recession that began in roughly 2008, he says, brought the old norm to a crashing end and the gates were opened for the new norm – an era of increased cost-consciousness and the ease and availability of additional channels through which consumers not only learn about products, but complete the cycle by purchasing without ever stepping into a store.
Stephens will speak at the PRSM Association 2014 Mid-Year Conference at 9 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Columbus, in Columbus, Ohio. Visit the PRSM Association 2014 Mid-Year Conference web site for the full schedule of events and registration information.
