Maryland Fire/EMS Agency Chooses McKesson
Deal includes new patient reporting system implementation, Toughbooks®, advanced reporting
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department, based in Largo, Maryland, has selected McKesson Business Performance Services (McKesson) to provide an end-to-end, technology-based revenue cycle solution for enhanced collections, better operational reporting and improved regulatory compliance.
“The comprehensive technology solution we’re providing to Prince George’s County, coupled with the expertise of our EMS revenue cycle experts, will help solidify the department’s financial foundation and position the agency to meet growing demands for its services.”
McKesson will be responsible for coding, claims and denial management, and also will oversee the department’s transition to a new electronic patient care reporting (EPCR) system. The advanced platform is capable of conveying incident data to the state of Maryland, and will connect with 100 mobile tablets, or Toughbooks®, supplied by McKesson for capturing patient care services information in the field.
Prince George’s County operates a blended Fire/EMS department made up of both professionals and volunteers serving urban and rural areas. As a result, McKesson will generate customized activity reports to help the county allocate revenue among the department’s seven battalions and 48 stations.
McKesson will also provide a full-time, on-site professional to assist with technology training and system maintenance. In addition, McKesson EMS revenue specialists will offer ongoing consulting services focused on improving the financial performance of the department’s billing operation.
Prince George’s County has a population of about 880,000 and is located in southern Maryland adjacent to the District of Columbia. The Fire/EMS department responded to more than 130,000 service calls last year across a coverage area of approximately 500 square miles.
"The Department is excited to work with such a dynamic company as McKesson,” said Fire Chief Marc S. Bashoor, of the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department. “I'm looking forward to establishing an effective organizational relationship so that we can continue to provide the best Fire/EMS services to our citizens, visitors and businesses."
Bashoor said the department chose McKesson in part because of excellent client referrals provided by surrounding public safety agencies in Maryland and Virginia. In addition, he said, McKesson was the only vendor capable of providing a complete, end-to-end technology solution, and the only one able to produce the complex service reports required for revenue distribution.
Pat Leonard, president of McKesson Business Performance Services, said public safety agencies must find ways to improve their revenue collection as municipal governments face mounting budgetary constraints.
“First responders are up against a range of challenges, including rising operational costs, an increase in self-pay patients and flat or declining budget allocations,” he said. “The comprehensive technology solution we’re providing to Prince George’s County, coupled with the expertise of our EMS revenue cycle experts, will help solidify the department’s financial foundation and position the agency to meet growing demands for its services.”
