Seniors Can Benefit From an Array of Free Classes Offered in September by SCAN Health Plan Arizona
PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With autumn right around the corner, older adults in Maricopa County can go back to school by trying out a few free classes ranging from cooking to art offered by SCAN Health Plan Arizona.
All events are open to SCAN members as well as the general public; however, space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Anyone interested in attending may call 855-901-7226, ext. 3420, to register.
The following classes will take place at the SCAN Health Education Center at 1400 East Southern Avenue, Suite 735, in Tempe.
American Heart Association’s Go Red – Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, and 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease. Learn about gender disparities in heart disease and what you can do to lower your personal risk during this class, which will be held on Monday, September 29, from 10 to 11 a.m.
Artsy Smartsy – Let your inner artist shine with this series of classes focusing on art history, art making and storytelling in a variety of mediums. (There is a $5 materials fee per class.)
- Japanese Brush Painting will be taught on Monday, September 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
- Make a trivet during the Mosaic Glass class on Monday, September 22, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Balanced Body – All abilities are welcomed in this gentle exercise class in which participants use chairs to strengthen their core and legs to improve balance and flexibility. The hour-long class is offered on three Wednesdays in September: 3, 10 and 17 and begins at 9:15 a.m.
Brain Gym Boot Camp – For those over 50 who want to learn additional ways to promote brain health with brain activities that will give them a great mental “workout.” Brain Gym Boot Camp, a program of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, takes place on Wednesday, September 10, from noon to 4 p.m. (Class size is limited to 20 participants, and there is a $25 fee per class.)
Clean Eating – One of the hottest topics in nutrition, Clean Eating will teach seniors what it means to “eat clean” and how to choose and prepare foods in their closest form to nature. The class will be held on Wednesday, September 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Classroom in the Community (CITC) – This series of classes is focused on educating older adults about how to control and improve their health in a variety of areas through concentrating on prevention activities. The September CITC classes will be held on four Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.:
- Heart Health and Doc Talk on Tuesday, September 9.
- Living With Arthritis and Doc Talk on Tuesday, September 16.
- Healthy Eating on a Budget and Nutrition Bingo on Tuesday, September 23.
- Cell Phone Basics on Tuesday, September 30.
Cooking Clean Cooking Demo – During this hands-on demonstration, seniors will learn what clean cooking is along with some of the best ways to make their own fresh, low-cost and simple, clean food. The demo will take place on Wednesday, September 17, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Laughter Wellness – Seniors will have a blast during this unique exercise routine, which combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing. It’s performed either sitting or standing, and people of all fitness levels are encouraged to attend. Laughter Wellness will be held on September 4 and 18 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Life Reimagined – Older adults who are ready to embrace the next chapter of their lives, or at least explore some of the possibilities, should plan to attend Life Reimagined, a program of AARP, which will guide them through a step-by-step approach to envision, evaluate and make the next chapter of their lives a reality. It will be held on Thursday, September 25, from 1 to 3 p.m.
National Women’s Health and Fitness Day – Celebrating Women’s Health and Fitness Day, this class will cover the health concerns of women over 55 and those who are post menopause. The class will be held on Wednesday, September 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
