Parallon Launches Program in 10 Florida Hospitals to Address Specialty Nurse Shortage
FRANKLIN, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Parallon, a leading provider of healthcare business and operational services, has implemented its solution to provide cost-effective training and onboarding of nursing graduates in the West Florida Division of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). The program — Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses (StaRN) — addresses the industry’s challenges by helping hospitals develop specialty-trained nurses.

StaRN began operation in June with a class of 52 recent nursing school graduates who will be placed at 10 hospitals in the West Florida Division of HCA. StaRN is an intensive, 13-week program for nursing graduates that combines classroom instruction, a robust simulation experience and hands-on clinical training done in conjunction with a regional academic partner. The program helps hospitals and nurses overcome a “catch-22:” lacking the experience to staff a high-acuity unit, but unable to find the opportunity to gain that experience.

Upon completion of the program, nursing graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skill that typically comes from more experienced staff nurses. StaRN is tailored to each individual hospital’s requirements and covers medical-surgical, telemetry and critical-care training.
Hospitals pay a placement fee that covers all the costs of the StaRN program. To participate, nurses make a two-year commitment to work at the sponsor hospital.
