Goodwin Procter Names David Hashmall Chairman
Regina Pisa Continues to Serve Firm As Chairman Emeritus
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Goodwin Procter LLP, a national AmLaw 50 firm, today announced that partner David M. Hashmall has been elected to succeed Regina M. Pisa as the firm’s Chairman on October 1, 2014. Pisa, who will continue on in a new role as Chairman Emeritus, has led Goodwin since 1998 when she became the first woman to be named Chairman and Managing Partner of an AmLaw firm. Hashmall will serve a five-year term, becoming the sixth chairman in the firm’s 102-year history.
“Regina’s legacy leaves us wired for success”
As Chairman, Hashmall will focus on overall firm strategy and policy formation, external growth efforts, client relations and external communications activities. He will work closely with Goodwin Procter Managing Partner Robert S. Insolia, who oversees day-to-day operations at the firm and manages the performance of its practice areas and attorneys.
Hashmall, who has led the firm’s Litigation Department in New York, has more than 35 years of experience in complex commercial disputes, especially in matters involving patent and intellectual property litigation, at both the trial and appellate level. He joined Goodwin Procter as a partner in 2001 following the firm’s acquisition of Schneck Weltman & Hashmall. Since that time, the firm has more than tripled in size and revenue as it has expanded across the United States and globally. After celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2012, Goodwin Procter realized record growth in 2013.
“These are exciting times for Goodwin Procter,” said Pisa. “Over the past 16 years we have gone on a transformational journey that has taken us from being one of the most respected firms in Boston to a firm with operations on a global scale. We did this by establishing one of the most collaborative and inclusive cultures in the profession and by always putting client needs first. David shares this commitment to our award-winning culture and how it drives client centricity, and I am delighted that he will be assuming the role of Chairman and continuing our path on this transformational journey,” Pisa added.
Under Pisa’s leadership, Goodwin Procter has grown from 300 lawyers primarily in Boston to more than 900 lawyers serving clients from eight locations in the United States, Europe and Asia. The American Lawyer recently recognized Pisa’s innovative leadership style and vision for big ideas, naming her one of the “Top 50 Big Law Innovators of the Past 50 Years.”
Goodwin’s inclusive and collaborative culture has earned the firm significant recognition for being one of the best places for women to work in law by Working Mother magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers, and last year the Human Rights Campaign named the firm one of the best places to work after awarding Goodwin Procter the top score in its LGBT Corporate Equality Index.
“Regina’s legacy leaves us wired for success,” said Hashmall. “Her contributions to the profession have set the standard for a new generation of attorneys, and the imprint she has made on Goodwin Procter has created a firm that allows us to recruit and retain the best people in the profession. Regina was the deciding factor when I elected to join the firm over a dozen years ago. Knowing she will continue to serve the firm and our clients will ensure a smooth and stable transition for our leadership team, and it is great news for everyone at Goodwin Procter,” Hashmall added.
In addition to leading Goodwin Procter’s Litigation Department, Hashmall has served on the firm’s Executive Committee and Allocations Committee. His focus on client service has earned him the Client Service All-Star designation by BTI Consulting Group, an honor determined through the input of general counsel and large and Fortune 1000 organizations. He has also been recognized by Chambers USA and Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Patent 1000 for his IP litigation work.
Hashmall received his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1977 and his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1972. He will continue to be based out of the firm’s New York office.
