Avoid Summertime Pests During Outdoor Gatherings
The National Pest Management Association shares tips on how to reduce pests at picnics or BBQs
FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Outdoor get-togethers are common during the summer months, but more often than not, hosts and guests alike must deal with pesky party crashers – in the form of ants, flies, mosquitoes and wasps. The National Pest Management Association offers advice on how to make the most of the summer season by limiting exposure to these annoying and sometimes dangerous pests.

“It can be a challenge to avoid pests when spending long periods of time outdoors, as some are attracted to typical barbeque fare and others are active at night when people tend to fire up the grill,” said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “If people follow some simple tips, like wearing insect repellant and keeping food covered, they can enjoy the summer season without worry.”
Experts from the NPMA suggest these tips to keep pests from disrupting summer gatherings:
- Prior to the party, check screen doors and repair any holes. Once the guests have arrived, remind them to shut the door behind them to keep pests from entering the home.
- Have plenty of insect repellant containing an EPA-registered active ingredient like DEET or picaridin for you and your guests.
- Yellowjackets and other stinging insects are attracted to sweet-smelling fragrances. Avoid using excessive perfume or cologne, and opt for unscented lotions and sunscreen.
- Provide clear plastic cups for your guests, as aluminum cans are good hiding spots for stinging insects.
- Adorn your deck or patio with citronella candles that can help minimize the presence of mosquitoes.
- Plan to serve food and beverages indoors, and reserve outdoor space for eating and entertaining.
- Clean spills and crumbs immediately from tables and other surfaces.
- Dispose of trash in tightly closed garbage containers located away from guests.
- Bring utensils and dishware indoors shortly after the meal.
