Global Upside CEO Joins City Year Board
Nonprofit Supports Education in Silicon Valley Schools
LOS ALTOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Global Upside, Inc. CEO Ragu Bhargava has joined the board of directors of City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley to take an active role in the nonprofit’s activities in support of education and youth in the most disadvantaged communities in Silicon Valley.
“We are pleased to welcome Ragu to our board”
City Year is a nonprofit organization that sends young volunteers, aged between 17 and 24, into schools where there are high numbers of children at risk of dropping out. Founded in 1988, City Year has grown steadily and is now active in 24 urban communities in the US and South Africa. Locally, this year, 73 City Year Corps volunteers are working in schools in the Silicon Valley area, helping teachers and students improve their academic performance and stay in school. City Year San Jose is supported by prominent Bay Area Organizations including Applied Materials, Cisco Foundation, NVIDIA, and the San Francisco 49ers Foundation. City Year’s contributions to education on a nationwide scale have been praised by education and community leaders including U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“We are pleased to welcome Ragu to our board,” said Sharon Matthews, chairwoman of the City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley board. “His personal commitment to education and his energy is already helping City Year develop new and exciting ways of fulfilling our mission here in the Bay Area.”
“City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley is focused on making a difference in our schools and helping the most at-risk students. Nearly 85 percent of students who received City Year’s intervention saw a drastic increase in their literacy and math scores. Moreover, City Year’s extended learning day added 90 days to the calendar year for students who need it most,” said City Year San Jose Executive Director and Vice President Toni S. Burke. “Ragu is committed to our mission and I look forward to working closely with him.”
“Education is the most important tool we have for increasing the standard of living of people in the U.S. and improving the competitive position of the U.S. economy,” said Ragu Bhargava. “Global Upside is supporting City Year, and I am personally supporting it as a board member, because City Year stands out as an organization that is totally committed to education of our most disadvantaged young people. City Year makes a difference, both for students in schools and for the young adults who sign on as AmeriCorps members to work in those schools.”
