The TJX Companies, Inc. Reports May 2001 Sales

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 2001--The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TJX) today reported May 2001 sales results. Sales for the four week period ended June 2, 2001 were $789 million, up 8% over $732 million achieved during the same four week period ended June 3, 2000. For the seventeen weeks ended June 2, 2001, sales reached $3,110 million, an increase of 8% over last year's $2,884 million. Consolidated comparable store sales for the four week period ended June 2, 2001 were flat with last year. For the seventeen week year-to-date period, consolidated comparable store sales were flat with last year.

Edmond J. English, President and Chief Executive Officer of The TJX Companies, Inc. stated, "Our May comparable store sales fell short of our expectations. In the Northeast, where weather was generally cooler and wetter than last year, business was soft. On the West Coast, where weather was warmer, sales were above plan.
