The TJX Companies, Inc. Reports August 2000 Sales

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--()--Aug. 31, 2000--The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX) today reported August 2000 sales results. Sales for the four week period ended August 26, 2000 were $735 million, up 9% over $674 million achieved during the four week period ended August 28, 1999. For the 30 weeks ended August 26, 2000, sales reached $5,101 million, an increase of 8% over last year's $4,707 million. Consolidated comparable store sales for the four week period ended August 26, 2000 were up 2% over last year. For the 30 week year-to-date period, consolidated comparable store sales increased 2% over last year.

Edmond English, President and Chief Executive Officer of The TJX Companies, Inc. stated, "August sales results were in line with our expectations. We are pleased with the significant improvement we are seeing in women's apparel, especially in ladies casual, career and juniors sportswear. Additionally, our inventories remain very liquid, positioning us well to take full advantage of the many great off-price buying opportunities in the marketplace."
