Wireless and Internet companies around the world created the open, global WAP standard in order to make accessing the Internet as easy and convenient as using a cellular phone. IDC predicts that by 2002 more people will have access to the Internet via wireless applications than traditional wired connections--and the U.S. market alone for mobile Internet is expected to reach 25 million people by 2006. As a result of this explosive market growth, rigorous performance testing of wireless applications has become essential for companies who want to ensure optimal performance of their wireless applications in order to exploit the growing wireless market.
"RSW Software's new WAP testing solutions address a critical industry need,"said Tareq Rahman, AVP, Corporate Systems, Boston Communications Group Inc., a leading provider of a range of resources, support services, and cutting edge technologies to telecommunications carriers to address the unique needs of the growing prepaid, electronic, and mobile commerce industries. "RSW's e-TEST for WAP will ensure that our customers in the electronic and mobile commerce industries will be able to achieve the best-possible performance of their business-critical wireless applications."
e-TEST for WAP
With the introduction of e-TEST for WAP, RSW Software is the only company to provide functional testing, load testing and monitoring for wireless applications. Companies developing pure wireless applications or migrating traditional Web applications to wireless can now effectively test the functionality and scalability of their applications before they go live--as well as successfully conduct ongoing monitoring for continuous performance management.
RSW's e-TEST for WAP lets users record interactions with a WAP application using a PC-based phone simulator. The simulator enables the user to access a WAP application from a PC, replicating the experience that a user would have when accessing the application from a wireless device. e-TEST for WAP captures the interactions of a real user accessing the application to record a Visual Script(TM). The Visual Scripts are then used for functional and regression testing, load testing, and post-deployment monitoring of the application, thus allowing the user to leverage their investment of test creation.
"WAP is providing a standard framework for building browser-based applications and extending them to the growing population of mobile users," said Billie Shea, analyst with Newport Group, Inc. "As companies strive to make information accessible via wireless applications anywhere, at anytime by a broader audience of users, they also face the obstacles of delivering Web content in multiple markup languages, in formats specific to the small display sizes of multiple wireless devices with low bandwidth connections. Thus, as wireless applications add another layer of infrastructure complexity and reliance on multiple third party networks, the requirement for adequate performance and functional testing dramatically increases. RSW Software's introduction of e-TEST for WAP provides a necessary solution that will allow businesses to confidently make inroads into wireless application development."
Extending and utilizing the core technology of RSW's e-TEST suite, e-TEST for WAP offers three distinct components, which can be used stand alone or purchased as a suite:
| -- | e-Tester for WAP - for regression and functional testing |
| -- | e-Load for WAP - for load and stress testing |
| -- | e-Monitor for WAP - for post-deployment monitoring Since e-TEST for WAP utilizes RSW's Visual Script technology, it can also be used for testing traditional Web applications, or to test applications that support both Web users and WAP users. RSW's WAP testing solution differs from traditional testing tools in several ways: |
| -- | Automatic session management: If applications use dynamic session identifiers or cookies to maintain session state, e-TEST for WAP manages session variables automatically without requiring the user to do any programming. |
| -- | Automatic response validation: Each Visual Script automatically captures and represents the WML Document Object Model (DOM) for each page, and validates the constituent objects at each iteration of the script, ensuring that the application is operating correctly during functional testing, load testing, and monitoring. |
| -- | Automatic script updating: As with a Web application, WAP |
"We expect to see explosive market demand for wireless application testing solutions over the next 12 months," said Yves de Montcheuil, director of product management, RSW Software. "With the announcement of e-TEST for WAP, RSW Software now brings the same ease-of-use and power to WAP application development and QA teams. Whether a company is developing new wireless applications or migrating existing applications to the wireless world, RSW's e-TEST suite and e-TEST for WAP now allow organizations to achieve exceptional application quality and scalability."
Pricing and Availability
Available in September 2000, e-TEST for WAP is priced from $6,995. An upgrade option, starting at $2,000 is available for existing e-TEST suite customers who wish to also test WAP applications.
