Former Teradyne VP Joins Gen. Colin Powell To Launch Global Science and Tech Education Initiative; Fred Van Veen will MC SEMI`s 30th Anniversary Benefit Gala

BOSTON--()--July 12, 2000--Former Teradyne Vice President Fred Van Veen will serve as Master of Ceremonies at tonight's Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI)'s 30th anniversary black tie benefit gala at Hangar 1 at Moffett Field in Mountain View, California. The "pearl anniversary" theme is "The World is Your Oyster" featuring retired Gen. Colin L. Powell (US Army retired) as the keynote speaker.

The event launches SEMI's Global Science and Technology Education Initiative in support of the academic needs and infrastructure support for middle and high school students. This marks the first of many fundraising events SEMI plans to develop to support global workforce training and education in math and science. All funds raised from tonight's event will be donated to five Silicon Valley math and science programs: the Synopsys Outreach Foundation, Workforce Silicon Valley, Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME), the Jose Valdes Summer Math Institute and the CHARITech Civic Venture Fund.

"I was surprised when they asked me to be master of ceremonies -- it's a big honor to be asked," stated Fred Van Veen, former member of SEMI's board of directors (1974-1982) who has emceed numerous SEMI events in the past. As a sought after speaker, he has shared the stage, in numerous events held in the US and Europe with a number of noted personalities, including, in 1995, the actress Debbie Reynolds.

Van Veen began his career with Teradyne in 1968 as Sales Promotion Manager and soon moved to become Assistant to the President, and since 1980 served as Vice President of Teradyne, Inc. He retired in 1995 and continues to serve as a consultant to Teradyne. In his role as a director of SEMI (1974-1982) Van Veen initiated the organization's Information Services Program including the widely attended Industry Strategy Symposia, held annually in the US, Asia and Europe. As an advisor to the US government, Van Veen was also involved in the area of Export Controls in the semiconductor test equipment area.

Author of numerous articles and "The Handbook of Stroboscopy (1966), Van Veen also wrote and produced Teradyne's annual reports from 1969 to 1998. He is currently writing a corporate history of Teradyne. Van Veen resides in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Commenting on the Wednesday evening event, SEMI President, Stanley T. Myers stated, "In the 30 years since SEMI was founded, we have seen high- technology industries grow to become the primary economic engine of the US and the driving force behind much of the world's social and economic development. This gala event will not only be a celebration of SEMI and of our own industry, but of all industries that comprise the vast 'electronics ecosystem' and of the people who continue to drive the innovations that advance technology and improve our lives."
