LOS ANGELES--()--Jennifer Beck, M.D., director of outreach and research for the Center for Sports Medicine at the Orthopaedic Institute for Children, has been named a Fellow in the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA). Fewer than 10% of all practicing orthopaedic surgeons have achieved this high distinction which recognizes exceptional accomplishments and leadership in the orthopaedics specialty.

At OIC, Dr. Beck provides specialized orthopedic care for pediatric patients, focusing in such areas as ACL tears, patella or shoulder instability, fractures and general sports medicine. OIC’s Center for Sports Medicine is a state-of-the-art facility staffed by a multidisciplinary team focused on helping young athletes return to their sports activities as quickly and safely as possible. The center currently treats nearly 300 children each month with the goal of getting young athletes back in the game—not just next season but for the long haul.

“Dr. Beck has played an essential role in the development of our Center for Sports Medicine and in helping to educate both professionals and consumers in the prevention and treatment of pediatric sports injuries,” said OIC Sports Medicine Director Richard Bowen, M.D. “We are thrilled to see her achieve this very well-deserved prestigious designation of Fellow which is a wonderful testament to her dedication to her profession and her patients. I am confident that she will be a future leader within the AOA and within the larger orthopaedic community as well.”

In addition to her role at OIC, Dr. Beck is an Associate Professor for the UCLA/Orthopaedic Institute for Children, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles. She is currently an active member of numerous professional organizations including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine (PRiSM), the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

A much sought-after speaker on topics and advances related to treating pediatric sports injuries, Dr. Beck is a frequent member of the faculty at the renowned Brennemann Lectures (sponsored by the Los Angeles Pediatric Society) and in 2019 was named one of three traveling fellows by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and the Asia Pacific Pediatric Orthopaedic Society.

Founded in 1887, the American Orthopaedic Association was the first orthopaedic association in the world and membership in the association is only earned following a stringent peer-reviewed process. Its programs are designed to provide leadership education for surgeons from residency through retirement and to provide thought leadership on and solutions for critical issues facing the broad orthopaedic community.
