Utah Fraternal Order of Police Endorses Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes for Re-election

SALT LAKE CITY--()--After interviewing the three attorney general candidates from major parties in the 2020 field, the Utah Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has decided to endorse incumbent Utah Attorney General Sean D. Reyes in his bid to remain the state’s top law enforcement official. The endorsement from the largest police labor organization in Utah is a positive sign for a Reyes victory in the June primary and November general election. The FOP was a key endorsement for Reyes when he won re-election in 2016.

According to FOP Utah President Brent Jex, “The FOP doesn’t always endorse in elections if there is not a super-majority consensus of our Board of Trustees. Here, there was. The FOP recognizes General Reyes will stand with us and law enforcement on important issues and we thank him for always being willing to collaborate, even when we may not always agree.”

Reyes is a well-known, vocal advocate for cops and their families. He has called for more due process, predictability and uniform treatment of any officers being investigated. Reyes supports increased compensation and retirement benefits, more expansive mental and behavioral health resources, and greater physical protection for peace officers in Utah.

“I’m deeply honored to receive the Utah FOP endorsement. FOP represents some incredible public servants and many heroes. It has been a privilege standing with Utah’s law enforcement community throughout the years,” said Reyes. “I look forward to winning re-election and continuing my work with peace officers statewide to keep Utah families and businesses safe and prosperous.”

In 2015, Reyes pioneered a globally recognized training initiative in the Utah AG’s Office that has since become a statewide program utilizing a virtual simulator available for all Utah cops. The state-of-the-art system has trained over 3,000 law enforcement officers on critical incidents, active shooter, hostage, domestic violence and suicide situations while focusing on violence de-escalation, and proper use of force and cultural awareness.

Former Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy explained, “General Reyes’ steady and Constitutionally based leadership as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Utah, based in the Rule of Law, has been a great benefit to the people of our state. His personal example and level of dedication to service, and his approachable and collaborative style helped me on many occasions as I made important law enforcement decisions on behalf of the people of Utah County during my service as the elected Sheriff.”
