The OTS Promotes Use of Designated Sober Drivers During Holiday Season

Community event kicks off national campaign against impaired driving

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--()--The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) hosted an event in downtown Sacramento December 10 to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of using designated sober drivers this holiday season.

The OTS partnered with local bars and restaurants within the Downtown Commons area to offer non-alcoholic drinks for designated sober drivers, as well as engage with the public on the importance of finding a safe way home after a night of drinking.

“Alcohol-related crashes accounted for 30 percent of all traffic deaths in California last year,” OTS Director Barbara Rooney said.

“While there is a stigma towards drunk driving, drinking and driving is still a major problem that is easily preventable by utilizing ways to get home without being behind the wheel.”

The event is part of a statewide and nationwide campaign against impaired driving from now until the end of the year focused not only on alcohol, but also drugs that can affect one’s ability to drive.

“We want people to have fun and enjoy downtown nightlife, but also be responsible and make smart choices,” Director Rooney said. “One of those choices is the decision to not drive after drinking or using drugs that can impair.”

The OTS administers funding for traffic safety programs statewide with the goal of reducing crashes that result in deaths, injuries, and economic losses. The OTS is a department under the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA).
