Central Basin MWD Representative Returns to Metropolitan Board

LOS ANGELES--()--Phillip D. Hawkins was seated today as a member of the Metropolitan Water District’s Board of Directors.

Hawkins returns to Metropolitan’s 38-member board, where he has represented Central Basin Municipal Water District for four different terms at various times between 2003 and February 2019. Hawkins follows Frank Heldman, who joined the board in March 2019. He will serve on the board’s Audit and Ethics and Finance and Insurance committees.

Hawkins was re-elected to his fifth term on Central Basin’s board in November 2016, representing the cities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Paramount and Signal Hill. He chairs the Central Basin Administration & Ethics Committee and actively participates in the Colorado River Water Users Association, the Urban Water Institute and the California Contract Cities Association.

A real estate broker since 1977, Hawkins has opened several businesses, including Realty World and Herbert Hawkins Realty, both in Bellflower, and Century 21 in Norwalk. Hawkins has served on the Rancho Southeast Association of Realtors and the Bellflower Township Redevelopment Committee. He is a member of the Bellflower, Cerritos, Lakewood and Paramount chambers of commerce.

Hawkins, a Cerritos resident, was elected to the California Assembly in 1994 and represented the 56th Assembly District until 1996.

Hawkins and his wife, Janice, have two children and six grandchildren.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a state-established cooperative that, along with its 26 cities and retail suppliers, provide water for nearly 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its members to develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
