MIAMI--()--Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE: R), a leader in commercial fleet management, dedicated transportation, and supply chain solutions, recently was announced as a recipient of the 2019 “Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation” by Redefining the Road, the official magazine of the Women in Trucking Association (WIT). The magazine created the award to support part of WIT’s mission to promote the accomplishments of companies that are focused on the employment of women in the trucking industry. This year, more than 150 nominations were received and nearly 11,000 votes were cast to identify the companies committed to the employment of women in the trucking industry.

“It’s a true honor to be recognized by Women in Trucking, an organization that advocates for women in our industry,” said Karen Jones, Chief Marketing Officer for Ryder, and 2016 finalist for WIT’s “Influential Woman in Trucking” award. “Ryder believes in the power of gender diversity and has demonstrated the value of that commitment across all parts of our business. We aim to foster a culture that is diverse and inclusive, one that supports women’s passion for our industry by valuing their contributions. We’re proud of the steps taken to invest and empower women to-date, but know that this is only just the beginning.”

Ryder has long been committed to initiatives that create more equitable opportunities in both its workplace and across the trucking industry. In 2014, Ryder and WIT collaborated to improve working conditions for female drivers and enhance safety by designing a female-friendly ergonomic truck cab that address the unique challenges women face when operating modern commercial heavy-duty vehicles. The vehicle package is available as a custom design with 15 specifications intended to better meet the needs of female drivers. Ryder has also partnered with WIT since 2016 to offer scholarships to women pursuing transportation careers, at a time when the industry needs to grow the pool of qualified diesel technicians and professional drivers. In 2018, Forbes recognized Ryder as a “Best Employer for Women” based on being a company where women can develop a rewarding career in the trucking industry. Additionally last month, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) honored Ryder for its exemplary board-leadership practices that promote and foster diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

2019 WIT nominations were evaluated based on several key features, including: corporate cultures that foster gender diversity; competitive compensation and benefits; flexible hours and work requirements; professional development opportunities; and career advancement opportunities. Ryder was recognized among a list of companies across diverse business sectors in the commercial freight transportation marketplace including motor carriers, third-party logistics companies, and original equipment manufacturers. Companies on the list were recognized at a special program in Dallas, Texas, at the Accelerate! Conference & Expo on October 2.
