DECT-5G Taking DECT and ULE into the Next Decade

DECT Forum Announces Availability of DECT-5G White Paper

BERN, Switzerland--()--The DECT Forum, the international association of the wireless home and enterprise communication industry, is pleased to announce the release and publication of the DECT-5G White Paper, which is available for download from the association’s website https://www.dect.org/downloads.aspx

With subscribers expected to reach the 1,6 billion mark by 2025, 5G promises to change the way we think about mobile communication and will touch all aspects of our lives. Today around 80% of data traffic is generated via indoor systems. As predominately indoor technologies, DECT and ULE already address low latency, low power applications for voice and data connected smart homes. Within the context of 5G, the application scope will widen to include market verticals such as Industrial, Healthcare and Audio, and, as it also uses existing broadband infrastructure, will assume a crucial strategic role in bringing an economically sustainable 5G to mass market.

This paper was borne out of the desire of DECT Forum members to create a document that summarizes the motivation and the dynamic that has driven this community towards DECT-5G. It sets out to address a broad cross section of society. In addition to members and the communication industry we exist in, the paper also speaks to Government bodies, Regulators, Standards bodies, Trade organizations and European and worldwide institutions. It has been written to be inclusive and allows anybody with an interest in technology to partake.

Scope of 5G

5G is the 5th generation of mobile communications and is based on the ITU-R's (International Telecommunication Union-Radio) technical specification IMT-2020 (AKA 5G). The implications of 5G reach far beyond our own industry and echo in ones that were previously considered out of scope. The key 5G use cases include eMBB (enhanced Mobile Broadband), URLLC (Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications), and mMTC (massive Machine Type Communications). Each of the underlying applications have very different requirements in technical and economic terms and will be served by different technical solutions.

Vertical and Horizontal Markets

Unlike previous generations, 5G is very much about accurately engaging new vertical markets. In this White Paper, various vertical markets are discussed in terms of their particular requirements and how DECT-5G has the potential to solve them. Examples include industrial, media and entertainment, smart home and healthcare. The paper also addresses horizontal markets, where a wide range of applications are possible in different verticals, for example with voice and low power.

DECT-5G makes a compelling case

IMT-2020 goes far beyond previous generations in terms of the technical requirements and the scope of applications. To this end, existing technologies will have to work together to achieve those goals as part of a Set of Radio Interface Technologies (SRIT). By implementing an interworking protocol DECT-5G will seamlessly interface and complement 3GPP 5G Mobile technology, ensuring that diverse sets of applications with very different economic parameters are accurately addressed by 5G.

This combination of acting as a complement to 3GPP, economic viability, existing infrastructure, and the availability of royalty free radio spectrum make DECT-5G a compelling argument for a range of potential 5G applications. By incorporating DECT-5G in IMT-2020, the mobile communication industry is afforded the opportunity of 5G living up to its true potential and touching the vast numbers of people and devices forecast for the coming decade.
