To Commemorate the Most Nominated Documentary of 2018, National Geographic is Making JANE Available for Free to All

Free Viewing Window Kicks off Aug. 13 on Nat Geo TV Website

WASHINGTON--()--National Geographic announced today that JANE, the seven-time Emmy®-nominated documentary written and directed by Brett Morgen, will be made available for free starting today, Aug. 13, for a special two weeks of viewing on the Nat Geo TV website.

While the film, hailed by Vogue as “one of the best documentaries of all time,” has already been viewed by over 11 million people worldwide, the network plans to expand its audience even further. The documentary will be available to all to watch for free on the Nat Geo TV website, without cable credentials, for two weeks (Aug. 13-27). The link to the viewing platform can be found here.

To help spread Jane Goodall’s message, National Geographic also created a free guide to facilitate discussion and get young people talking about what this film means to them personally. In collaboration with National Geographic’s nonprofit education division, a “Dear Jane” letter-writing campaign resulted in over 500 student essays explaining how Goodall has inspired them. These students had the opportunity to see JANE but there are still a number of people who have not yet had access, which drove the decision to set a free, two-week viewing experience on natgeotv.com this month.

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, has had a lifelong partnership with National Geographic. In 1960, she first set foot in Gombe, Tanzania, where the documentary opens. Three years later, National Geographic published its first cover story about Goodall and her research. Fifty-five years later, the institution is as dedicated to celebrating the trailblazer’s wisdom and achievements as ever. JANE is a direct extension of Goodall’s work, an honest portrayal of how she herself struggled with making moral and ethical decisions throughout her career. With the film even more accessible to Nat Geo’s unparalleled global audience, Goodall’s legacy will continue to inspire a new generation through the power of science, exploration and storytelling.

JANE, nominated for an Emmy® for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program, Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction Program (Single or Multi-Camera), Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction Program (Single or Multi-Camera) and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program, is also available on the National Geographic Video On-Demand MVPD platforms, the TVE apps and Hulu, in addition to being available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.
