Crisis Counseling Related to Shootings Increased 300 percent from 2015 to 2017, According to ComPsych Report

CHICAGO--()--ComPsych® Corporation today released a three-year report detailing crisis counseling requests from its more than 45,000 customers. Among the findings: shooting-related counseling sessions increased by more than 300 percent since 2015, and there was 20 times the number of natural disaster-related counseling sessions in 2017 vs 2015 due to hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. ComPsych Corporation is the world’s largest provider of employee assistance programs and is the pioneer and worldwide leader of fully integrated EAP, behavioral health, wellness, work-life, HR, FMLA and absence management services under its GuidanceResources® brand.

“As the number and scale of mass shootings continues to increase, and hurricanes have become more severe in recent years, there have been far greater numbers of people impacted, necessitating more crisis counseling after such events,” said Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, Founder Chairman and CEO of ComPsych. “These counseling sessions – also called critical incident stress management or CISM – help employees talk about and normalize their reaction to traumatic events, which can reduce the long-term psychological impact and get people back to normal functioning more quickly.”
