Snowmobile Virtual-Reality Video Aims to Train Saskatchewan First Responders While Promoting Public Safety

YORKTON, Saskatchewan--()--Operation Lifesaver:

WHEN: Thursday, February 22, 2018, 1:00 p.m. CST

WHERE: FFun Motor Sports, Highway 9, north of Yorkton, Sask.

Every year, dozens of Canadians – especially young Canadians – are killed or injured when they put themselves in unsafe situations around railway tracks and trains. Operation Lifesaver’s (OL) Saskatchewan Committee invites the media to attend a mock collision in Yorkton, Sask. to see first-hand what can happen when off-road vehicle operators don’t exercise caution at railway crossings.

In addition to promoting public safety, the re-enactment will be used to train local emergency responders, and to assess how multiple agencies respond to a rail-related incident. The mock-collision will also mark the official launch of OL’s new Look. Listen. Live. snowmobile-focused virtual-reality (VR) rail-safety video. The video immerses viewers in a 3D environment, and aims to give them the shocking – and hopefully unforgettable – experience of being in a collision with a train. The scenario that will be depicted at the Yorkton mock collision is very similar to the one seen in OL’s VR video, and members of the media will have the opportunity to experience the video at the event.

Operation Lifesaver’s Saskatchewan Committee is coordinating this event in partnership with CN, CP, CN Police, CP Police, the City of Yorkton, Yorkton Fire Protective Services, Crestvue Ambulance Service, Yorkton RCMP, the Regina Police Service, SGI and Saskatchewan Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Saskatchewan Public Safety, FFun Motorsports and the Yorkton Sno-Riders.

Please note, advance media registration for this event is required. Please contact Maryse Bétournay at mbetournay@railcan.ca or (613) 564-8100 to confirm your participation.
