THIS WEEK: 563 Events and Activities in Wisconsin to Raise Awareness About School Choice

Badger State Parents Encouraged to Look Into Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week

Governor Scott Walker Issues Proclamation Recognizing Jan. 21-27 as Wisconsin School Choice Week

MADISON, Wis.--()--School Choice Week began in Wisconsin and across America this Sunday, with the goal of raising awareness about the options that parents have for their children's education.

The Week will feature 563 events and activities across the Badger State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. In addition, an education expo is planned on Saturday, January 27 at the Mexican Fiesta in Milwaukee.

Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for Wisconsin’s more than 1.3 million children. For example, families in Wisconsin can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state's public school open enrollment policy is one of the nation's broadest and most accommodating. The state also offers a private school choice program and tuition-free, public online schooling.

Governor Scott Walker issued an official proclamation recognizing Jan. 21-27 as Wisconsin School Choice Week. In addition, the county of Barron and Crawford and the cities of Balsam Lake Village, Algoma, Baraboo, Kaukauna, Neenah, Peshtigo, Viroqua, Lodi, Muskego, Prairie du Chien, Pembine, Boulder Junction, Wisconsin Rapids, Wausau, Wrightstown, Fontana, Denmark, Norway, and Lincoln have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

“Education is the key to success, so let’s give all children access to the best schools. Parents need to know their options in order to take the best decisions for their children,” said Tammy Olivas of Hispanics for School Choice.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“Wisconsin has been a national pioneer in expanding access to education options for children and families,” said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. “National School Choice Week is a time to celebrate Wisconsin’s incredible school choice success stories, and a time for parents to discover all of the K-12 educational opportunities available to children.”
