Physicians’ Education Resource® to Host Precision Medicine Through Plasma: Using Liquid Biopsies in Contemporary Oncology Care

CRANBURY, N.J.--()--Physicians’ Education Resource® (PER®), the leading media resource for oncology and hematology continuing medical education, presents its latest conference, Precision Medicine Through Plasma: Using Liquid Biopsies in Contemporary Oncology Care. Chaired by Benjamin P. Levy, M.D., clinical director of medical oncology at Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital, the event will be held Dec. 2 at Convene at 117 West 46th St. in New York City.

“Given the importance of identifying the molecular underpinnings of breast, colon and lung cancers, coupled with the challenges that traditional tumor biopsies pose, liquid ctDNA platforms offer a novel approach to help diagnose and characterize tumors. We now have a growing body of literature demonstrating that these platforms can be an accurate molecular surrogate for tumor biology. I look forward to discussing the recent explosion of research surrounding ctDNA in solid tumors, the complexities that come with it and the future applications of ctDNA,” Levy said.

The following expert faculty will present case discussions to update attending medical professionals on the developments in liquid biopsies:

  • Ryan B. Corcoran, M.D., Ph.D., director of the gastrointestinal cancer center program at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center
  • Massimo Cristofanilli, MD., professor of medicine, associate director of translational research and precision medicine, director of the OncoSET precision medicine program at Robert H. Laurie Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Balazs Halmos, M.D., M.S., professor of clinical medicine, and director of thoracic oncology and clinical cancer genomic at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center
  • Corey J. Langer, M.D., FACP, professor of medicine in the hematology/oncology division at the University of Pennsylvania and director of thoracic oncology at Abramson Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Geoffrey R. Oxnard, MD., assistant professor of Medicine, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School
  • Aparna R. Parikh, M.D., of the department of hematology/oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Heather A. Parsons, MD., MPH, Medical Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

“Approximately 10 years ago, liquid biopsies were considered something out of a science fiction novel. Now, this is regularly used as an alternative to conventional tissue biopsy and is considered more patient-centric. We are thrilled to offer a platform for medical professionals to gather, interact and learn more about this innovation,” said Phil Talamo, president of PER.®

This half-day interactive educational conference will delve into the strengths and limitations of liquid biopsies compared with the conventional tissue biopsy. Attendees will receive a brief overview of the foundation of liquid biopsy and explore the clinical applications for patients with cancer. The conference is divided into three sections that explore the role of liquid biopsies in lung, breast and gastrointestinal cancers.
