Humana Foundation Appoints Walter D. Woods as New Foundation Chief Executive Officer

Experienced nonprofit leader to guide Humana Foundation as it focuses on addressing social determinants of health

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--()--The Humana Foundation, philanthropic arm of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) for the past 36 years, announced today that Walter D. Woods has been appointed the foundation’s chief executive officer. He has started in the role this week. Woods brings 30 years of corporate and nonprofit experience to the position, including roles where he focused on helping senior citizens live healthier lives.

Woods joins the Humana Foundation as it has been evolving its overall strategy to focus primarily on addressing the upstream barriers to overcoming social determinants of health. This approach aligns with Humana Inc.’s work to help people have more ‘Healthy Days’ by pursuing a Bold Goal of improving the health of the communities it serves 20 percent by 2020.

“Our aim at the Humana Foundation is to co-create communities where leadership, culture and systems work to improve and sustain positive health outcomes for their residents,” said Bruce D. Broussard, President and CEO of Humana Inc., and chairman of the Humana Foundation board of directors. “We’re excited to have Walter come on board because of his deep interest in helping individuals improve their health, and helping communities provide all of their citizens the opportunity to achieve their best health.”

Woods most recently served as president of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Foundation, where he provided strategic direction in driving donor and community impact, as well as strengthening the Foundation’s overall brand. A nonprofit veteran, Woods has served in a number of executive-level roles, with organizations ranging from the AARP Foundation, to the World Bank, to the Boys & Girls Clubs.

“I am grateful to have this opportunity with the Humana Foundation at a time when the overall health of our nation has not been trending in the right direction,” Woods said. “The Humana Foundation’s focus on social determinants of health aligns with Humana’s work to improve the health of the communities it serves. The company’s Bold Goal is inspiring to many Humana associates, and to my new colleagues at the Humana Foundation. I’m eager to begin my work with the foundation.”

Woods – who lived part of his childhood in Louisville, Ky., Humana’s corporate hometown – has returned to Louisville for the role. Interim Humana Foundation leader Pattie Dale Tye will continue in her role with Humana Inc., leading its Bold Goal efforts. The Humana Foundation Board of Directors wishes to thank Tye for her many contributions leading the foundation over the past year during the search for the organization’s new full-time leader.
