Innovative, economical technologies for low-cost EFI systems
The global leader of automotive components suppliers, DENSO, has developed a new EFI system that does not use a throttle position sensor or engine temperature sensor. Instead, it uses a newly developed control technology that ensures the same fuel economy and environmental performance as conventional fuel injection systems. This elimination of sensors in EFI will lead to a reduction in the cost of EFI, which will make their way into the entry-segment two-wheelers that account for the highest volume in the motorcycles market.
“EFIs are mostly used in motorcycles but, in recent years, there has been a growing need to apply these systems in scooters, which are used in the emerging markets of India. By focusing on this trend, DENSO developed a low-cost fuel injection system that delivers the same fuel economy and environmental performance as conventional systems but with fewer components,” says Ganesh Subramaniam, a lead analyst at Technavio for powertrain research.
Integrated engine management for two-wheelers
The convenience of engine management system (EMS) is now available for motorcycles. Bosch's EMS offers optimally coordinated systems for every type of two-wheelers, which includes affordable single-cylinder models in Asia to powerful motorcycles in Europe and North America.
“EMS for motorcycles is based on the port fuel injection systems of cars. Compared to carburetor engines, EFI engines are faster and dynamic with improved peak performance. Two-wheelers equipped with Bosch EMS operate reliably even with lower quality gasoline, minimizing breakdowns and maintenance cost. These are due to the optimum integration of all components into an electrically controlled system, which includes fuel injection and supply, air management, ignition and exhaust gas treatment, and ECU,” says Ganesh.
Laser micromachining in EFI manufacturing to reduce process cost
The supply nozzle plays the most critical role in the functioning of the EFI. As the fuel injector nozzle supplies fuel for combustion, it impacts fuel efficiency and emissions generated by the vehicle through the combustion process. In the past few years, countries across the globe have been implementing stringent emission norms. Hence, OEMs are exploring advanced manufacturing techniques to design optimal fuel injector nozzles that reduce emissions.
