LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report on the global missile guidance system market provides an analysis of the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2017-2021. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The global missile guidance system market is expected to experience a linear growth during the forecast period, mainly due to the increased procurement of several types of guided missiles by militaries in line with the increasing territorial conflicts. Also, with consistent development of science and technology, precision-strike weapons are becoming important for winning victory in the military field. The functionality of a missile depends largely on its guidance system. Therefore, newer guidance systems are being developed. Guidance systems started off with command guidance system to homing guidance system to laser beam rider; and finally, the hybrid INS/GPS guidance systems are being developed.

Improved guidance systems for hypersonic missiles

The interest in the development of hypersonic systems of propulsion is growing because of their outstanding operational capacities, which are far beyond the existing systems. One of the major reasons behind the development of such super-fast missiles is the fact that more and more countries are focusing on improving their countermeasure capabilities against cruise missiles.

“The need for developing advanced missile systems has gone up. India and Russia are working together on the hypersonic missile, BrahMos II, which is one of the fastest missiles under development,” says Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on defense.

Adaptive missile guidance through GPS

Over the years, the dependence of militaries on GPS for positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) has increased significantly. Currently, however, advancements are being directed toward the use of GPS to guide missiles to their targets. GPS-guided missiles are known to have high navigational and surveying abilities and are increasingly being preferred by militaries across the globe.

“With the incorporation of GPS guidance systems, the warheads possess a new capability to be delivered to any part of the globe with the help of an onboard computer in the missile and GPS satellite system. GPS is used for accurate targeting of various military weapons, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and ICBMs,” adds Moutushi.

Reduction in size, weight, and power (SWaP) of guidance systems

The miniaturization of weapons has led to the requirement of microscopic electronics and has given rise to one of the most sought-after trends in military and military-based products, which is the development of SWaP based components. The focus majorly lies on reducing the size of the components, the weight of the entire system by leveraging on sharing technology, and reducing the overall power consumed by the system.

Raytheon, in 2015, unveiled the Pike missile, which is a hand-launched 16-inch long precision guided munition weighing less than 2 pounds. The 16-inch missile is a fire-and-forget type weapon that works on semi-active laser guidance system and is designed with the capability of withstanding the jarring acceleration of the missile.
