The top three revenue-generating application segments of the global sodium silicate market are discussed below:

Detergents

The detergent industry is growing worldwide. The major user for household detergent is the laundry and washing industry. Detergents are present in both liquid and dry granular forms. They consist of sodium silicate, which makes them useful for a wide range of applications such as metal cleaning, textile processing, washing and de-inking paper, and washing.

According to Mohd Shakeel Iqbal, a lead metals and minerals research analyst from Technavio, “Sodium silicate has some fundamental properties such as low interfacial tension of solutions against various components of dirt and significant emulsifying and suspending potential. Cleaning with alkaline solutions is the oldest and the most widely used form of commercial metal cleaning. Sodium silicate retains alkalinity for neutralizing soiled materials, which makes it preferable over other similar compounds.”

Catalysts

Sodium silicate is used as a heterogeneous catalyst because of its low cost, easy application, high density, and abundant availability. It is a preferred catalyst for transesterification and catalysis of organic raw materials to produce biodiesel. It is also used as a dehydration catalyst to produce lactic acid from glycerol.

“Sodium silicate, on treatment with acids, forms silicic acid, which is used as a catalyst. It is also used in the preparation of silica, silica-alumina, and other zeolite catalysts, which are used in the petroleum industry to produce high octane gasoline. These catalysts have large internal pore area, which gives them the capacity to absorb large quantities of moisture as well as other substances,” adds Shakeel.

Paper and pulp

In paper and pulp industry, sodium silicate is used as a de-linking agent to make sure that the ink penetrates the paper well and does not smear. It is a key ingredient in mechanical pulp bleaching processes. Silicates stabilize bleaching by complexing transition metals that catalyze hydrogen peroxide decomposition and by buffering the pH to eliminate alkali darkening.

Sodium silicate plays a key role in the brightening of pulp yield by stabilizing hydrogen peroxide. In the process, it also deactivates the metal ions present in the pulp mixture. Brighter pulp yield results in a superior quality of end-use products.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:

  • BASF
  • Evonik Industries
  • Occidental Petroleum Corporation
  • PQ Corporation
  • W.R Grace
