Rising consumer disposable income and growing fitness awareness
Growing disposable income is a key factor driving the sales of waterproof breathable garments. This allows vendors to increase their product portfolio based on premium, standard or mid-range, and low-range pricing. In addition to the use of waterproof breathable textiles in sportswear, consumers also prefer them in baby wear, thereby increasing the manufacture of such garments for kids and babies.
Narendra Nandaigiri, a lead apparel and textile research analyst at Technavio, says, “The increased interest in fitness and health and the adoption of various sports like mountaineering, snow sports, and water sports are increasing the demand for waterproof breathable apparel globally. The US is one of the key leading countries in purchasing waterproof breathable garments due to active participation in sports. A significant growth in exports and imports of related commodities has led to an increase in waterproof breathable textiles in Europe and Central Asia.”
Protection from extreme weather conditions
Waterproof breathable textiles are used in garments to protect from different types of climatic conditions like heat, rain, and wind. The apparel used for these purposes needs to be strong and should not allow water molecules to penetrate the fabric. Breathable textiles provide ventilation with different layers and passively allow water vapor and gases to pass through. The benefits provided by the garments made of such fabrics are driving the sales of these garments.
“The normal body temperature is 37°C, and the skin temperature is around 34°C, depending on the climatic conditions. The temperature of the human body should not go beyond critical limits of 24°C and 45°C. Waterproof breathable apparel protects the body in extreme weather conditions. For instance, if the temperature is very high, the body releases more sweat due to humidity. The microclimate inside the coat or apparel increases. Therefore, the fabric used in clothing should allow the release of vapors from the inside,” adds Narendra.
Increase in application of waterproof breathable fabrics in different end products
Waterproof breathable fabrics are used in permeable outerwear, sportswear, and mountain wear, as well as in medical appliances like breathable knee support and breathable incise tapes. In permeable outerwear, the open pores of the apparel allow the body to be cooled by allowing nominal airflow. The pores also help in removing the moisture from the body more effectively and quickly. The waterproof breathable textile used in the garment keeps the body dry both from the inside and outside.
Waterproof breathable textiles are also used in ortho-medical support, Equestrian underwear, survival suits, surface water sports, liners, and footwear. The materials used in medical appliances are made up of polyester and polyester-nylon blends of non-stretch and stretchable models. These fabrics are air-tight, antimicrobial, fluid-proof, flame-retardant, and breathable in nature. The increase in the application of waterproof breathable textiles in different end products is driving the global waterproof breathable textile market.
