3M Recognized by Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 18th Consecutive Year

ST. PAUL, Minn.--()--3M continues to lead the way in sustainability – recognizing that along with being good for the planet, sustainable practices are good for business.

In recognition of the company’s focus on sustainability, 3M has been selected for inclusion in the 2017 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). This marks the 18th consecutive year 3M has been recognized for its sustainability efforts both in the U.S. and globally – making it one of a short list of companies that have consistently appeared on the list.

The science-based company has a long-standing commitment to sustainability, from its Pollution Prevention Pays program that began in 1975 to 3M’s forward-looking sustainability goals for 2025 related to raw materials, water, energy and climate, health and safety, as well as education and development.

“Part of the 3M Vision is improving every life, and we take that very seriously,” said 3M Chief Sustainability Officer Jean Bennington Sweeney. “More than ever, we have a strong sense of purpose at the heart of everything we do -- from products to policies to partnerships."

This commitment to sustainability and improving lives has led to numerous innovative 3M technologies and products that address global sustainability challenges:

  • Window films that let light in and keep heat out, reducing the energy load on a building
  • Tiny glass bubbles that replace heavier materials, reducing weight without sacrificing strength and contributing to energy efficiency
  • Respirators, surgical drapes and single-patient use rolls of medical tape that help hospitals reduce waste and infection caused by cross-contamination
  • Paper thin display films that enhance light, making smart phones brighter, while requiring less battery power

"We're very proud to be recognized in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index," Sweeney said. "It’s a testament to our 90,000 employees who every day are working to help solve some of the world's biggest challenges."

The DJSI is created by research analysts who perform an in-depth study of companies’ environmental, social and economic performance. One of the most highly regarded sustainability performance rankings, the DJSI is released annually by S&P Dow Jones Indices, a leading index provider, and RobecoSAM, an investment specialist focused exclusively on sustainability investing.
