LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report on the global network interface cards market provides an analysis of the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2017-2021. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The development of advanced technologies, such as cloud-based services and big data analytics, has increased the demand for data centers worldwide. Currently, developed countries such as the US are the largest market for data center operations. The demand for data centers among large enterprises, CSPs, government agencies, and telecommunication organizations have seen a marked increase. The growing demand for colocation facilities among SMEs has fueled the demand for data centers.

Jujhar Singh, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on embedded systems sector, says, “The development of advanced technologies such as cloud-based services and big data analytics has increased the demand for data centers worldwide. Currently, developed countries, such as the US, are the largest markets for data center operations. However, the number of data centers in developing countries, such as China, India, and Brazil, has increased considerably, which is fueling the adoption of network switch and router products in these countries.”

Emergence of PoE and PLC

Installing a cable, which is costly and not always possible, is one of the major disadvantages of wired communication. Power line communication (PLC) and power over Ethernet (PoE) provide a better option to wired networks. PLC does not require any wiring, and a power source is always present, which can be accessed remotely.

“As of 2016, a data transfer of several megabits can be attained, which makes it appropriate for HD video streams. In addition, it can be used for broadband Internet connections but lacks required signal propagation range,” according to Jujhar.

Software-defined networking

SDN is an evolving network architecture where the forwarding plane and network control are decoupled. The network can be programmed directly. The control is transferred from specific network devices, such as Ethernet switches and routers, to manageable computing devices. This simplifies the management of network infrastructure in an enterprise data center environment.

The explosion of mobile devices and content and the advent of cloud services and server virtualization are the major reasons driving the networking industry to re-examine traditional network architectures.

Open Ethernet

As data consumption is growing at an exponential rate, organizations are replacing the traditional network infrastructure with modern equipment such as 10GbE and 40GbE switches in order to gain the ability to scale in real-time and increase their efficiency. To attain efficiency, it is important that enterprises adopt the best software that interfaces with the latest hardware switches to provide higher performance.

Proprietary closed-code Ethernet switches restrict to gain the maximum benefits from the compute and storage infrastructures. Open Ethernet is an alternative approach to traditional Ethernet switches, an initiative by Mellanox Technologies. It offers complete flexibility and an opportunity to custom design networks to enhance utilization, efficiency, and gain better ROI.

The key vendors are as follows:

  • Allied Telesis
  • AVM International
  • StarTech.com
