Wolf Greenfield Celebrates 90 Years of Intellectual Property Law

BOSTON--()--Today, intellectual property (IP) law firm Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C. celebrates its 90th anniversary. This landmark occasion commemorates Wolf Greenfield’s long history of providing top-quality service to innovators across technologies whose intellectual property is at the core of their business.

Founded as a solo practice in Boston nearly a century ago, Wolf Greenfield is now comprised of 125 legal professionals working out of offices in Boston and New York. Since the firm’s founding in 1927 by Ezekiel Wolf—one of the first patent lawyers with a technical background to practice in Boston—cutting-edge science and technology have been part of its DNA. Wolf first focused the firm’s practice on electrical technologies, and his clients included Reginald Fessenden, an inventor who was the first to transmit voice across the Atlantic Ocean, and Radio Shack, then a single store in downtown Boston. In 1952, Wolf’s son, David, joined his father to handle chemical cases, and in 1955, George Greenfield joined to focus primarily on mechanical cases. In 1961, Stanley Sacks, husband of David Wolf’s cousin, joined the firm.

“We are proud to have reached this significant milestone,” said Tim Oyer, Wolf Greenfield’s president and managing partner. “While we’ve grown to become one of the largest IP firms in the country, we have done so carefully and methodically, and stayed true to our exclusive mission of understanding clients’ business objectives, then strategically building, protecting and enforcing their IP globally, consistent with those objectives. We believe Ezekiel Wolf would be pleased.”

Over the past several decades, Wolf Greenfield has expanded significantly—from 15 lawyers in 1985 to 125 attorneys and technology specialists today. Leveraging that momentum, the firm opened its second office, in the Chrysler Building in New York, in 2016.

The firm’s technical know-how, a hallmark since its earliest days, remains unmatched. In 1988, Wolf Greenfield established the first technology specialist program in New England and hired its first “tech spec,” who is now a shareholder. Today, more than two-thirds of the firm’s legal professionals have advanced degrees in science or engineering, and more than half have industry experience in those fields.

In addition to Wolf Greenfield’s dedication to protecting and enforcing the intellectual property rights of leading companies, innovative startups, major research universities and Nobel Prize winners, the firm is committed to pro bono work and community engagement.
