LOS ANGELES--()--As part of its ongoing community outreach activities, the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) hosted the Watts Bears football team on its campus recently, providing free sports physical exams for this unique team comprised of underprivileged youth in Watts and coached by members of the Los Angeles Police Department. This marked the third year OIC has provided this free service.

Among those participating in providing the exams were: OIC President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony Scaduto, M.D.; Director of the Center for Sports Medicine Richard Bowen, M.D.; Associate Director of Non-Operative Sports Medicine Joshua Goldman, M.D.; Assistant Professor-in-Residence Nicholas Bernthal, M.D.; and a team of nurse practitioners. In addition to the physicals, the day included breakfast, prizes and assorted giveaways for members of the team.

“Partnerships between community organizations and local law enforcement are vital to keep kids safe, healthy, and out of trouble,” said Dr. Bowen. “The Watts Bears Pop Warner football team is a fabulous program and provides a safe haven and mentoring for kids living in public housing. OIC is honored to lend our support to these young athletes who are developing lifetime skills that will help them create positive futures for themselves and their families.”
