ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle has been recognized with the prestigious 2017 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the DC Circuit. She will be presented with the award by Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland at the DC Circuit Judicial Conference on June 29.
Huvelle has served as a U.S. District Judge for the District of Columbia since 1999. Previously, she was an associate judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, where she served in the Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions from 1990 to 1999. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she was in private practice at the firm of Williams & Connolly, where she became the firm’s first female partner.
A graduate of Boston College Law School, Huvelle earned her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College and also holds a master’s degree in city planning from Yale University. Following law school, she served as law clerk to Chief Justice Edward F. Hennessey of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
Huvelle is a member of the Edward Bennett Williams American Inn of Court. She was appointed by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. to the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, and to the Committee on Criminal Law and the Committee on Judicial Resources of the Judicial Conference of the United States. Huvelle serves on the board of directors of the Abramson Scholarship Foundation, which provides mentoring and college scholarships to District of Columbia public school students. She has been a Fellow of the American Bar Association and has taught trial practice at Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law.
