NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Institutional fixed income asset manager Ramirez Asset Management, Inc. (RAM), is building on its 2016 successes. In the first quarter of 2017, RAM achieved top quartile performance for its Strategic Core strategy and was again recognized as Fixed Income Emerging Manager of the Year by Emerging Manager Monthly1.
Launched on March 31, 2012, RAM's Strategic Core strategy is ranked in the top 8 percent of the eVestment U.S. core fixed income manager universe for its five-year performance ending March 31, 2017, returning 3.79 percent during this time period versus 2.34 percent for its benchmark, the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index. As of March 31, 2017, RAM managed more than $530 million in Core and Strategic Core assets, which are invested in high-quality debt across the traditional fixed income market, including credit, municipals, securitized products and high-yield.
"Our success is a testament to our experience and 'Best Ideas' approach to portfolio management, and our depth of understanding of the fixed income market," said Samuel Ramirez, Jr., founder, president and CEO of RAM, which had $1.6 billion in assets under management as of March 31, 2017. "Our team of 15 investment professionals has an average of 22 years of investment experience in the fixed income market and have witnessed various economic cycles."
RAM’s process relies on a team-based approach to asset allocation, using top-down macroeconomic analysis and bottom-up, issuer-level research. In addition, its proprietary models and systems enable the firm to exploit inefficiencies inherent in the municipal market to generate excess returns. The firm's unique allocation to taxable municipals is an advantage, as the sector's performance has a lower correlation to other areas of the fixed income market while providing a high-quality alternative.
More Accolades and New Mandates in 2017
In addition, Emerging Manager Monthly named RAM its 2016 Fixed Income Emerging Manager of the Year for the second year in a row. The award is based on excess returns over the benchmark, performance, asset growth and information ratios.
The firm's significant asset growth averaged 30 percent annually over the last three years. The Strategic Core and Core investment strategies both had strong three-year performance track records compared to peers. As of March 31, 2017, the Strategic Core strategy ranked among the top 3 percent and the Core strategy ranked among the top 10 percent of the eVestment U.S. core fixed income manager universe.
RAM's client base continues to expand as well. The firm was recently selected by the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer to manage $25 million in fixed income assets for The Illinois Funds, the State's Public Treasurers' Investment Pool. RAM was also selected by the Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of Illinois to manage $50 million in fixed income assets in a customized Core strategy.
RAM works with a majority of the largest corporate and public retirement plans in the U.S., either directly or through manager-of-manager programs, on Core, Short Duration and Long Duration strategies, and cash products. RAM is one of the few emerging and diverse firms to have a five-year track record managing Defined Contribution Stable Value assets for eligible plans.
"Our solid performance and risk profile are translating into new direct relationships with blue-chip clients in the public and corporate sectors," said Ramirez. "We are pleased to be recognized for our fixed income expertise and our flexibility to fill gaps in institutional portfolios in any market cycle."
