DHL Express U.S. Certified as Great Place to Work

  • Employees cite the company’s broad range of training and recognition programs, and support of work-life balance as standout perks

PLANTATION, Fla.--()--DHL, the world’s leading international express delivery company, was recently certified in the United States as a great workplace by the independent analysts at Great Place to Work®. DHL Express U.S. earned this credential based on extensive ratings its employees provided in anonymous surveys.

“A great company always starts with great people – never taking them for granted, recognizing and appreciating their successes, and giving them the tools they need to thrive along their career path is a core part of our business,” said Greg Hewitt, CEO, DHL Express U.S. “One of the many factors that makes DHL a great place to come to work every day is our employee support and recognition programs; they are so inclusive that no matter where you are in the corporate hierarchy, you are a beneficiary of them.”

According to the study, 89 percent of employees at DHL Express U.S. say their workplace atmosphere is great. A summary of the company’s ratings can be found at http://reviews.greatplacetowork.com/dhl-express-us.

“We applaud DHL Express U.S. for seeking certification and releasing its employees’ feedback,” said Kim Peters, Executive Vice President of Great Place to Work's Certification Program. “These ratings measure its capacity to earn its own employees’ trust and create a great workplace—critical metrics that anyone considering working for or doing business with DHL Express U.S. should take into account as an indicator of high performance.”

Respect, applause and philanthropy

Among the programs that employees feel have captured the greatness of their workplace are policies that maintain a culture of mutual respect, integrity and professional conduct.

These company-wide standards ensure bullying is prohibited and not tolerated at any level.

In addition, employees value an environment that empowers, develops and incentivizes all staff. Recognition programs throughout the year inspire high levels of employee engagement and positive outcomes.

Another reason that DHL is a great place to work is its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Employees are proud of the company’s scholarship programs that award four-year college scholarships to dependents of eligible employees—and most employees are eligible.

Employee engagement with visible results

DHL offers its Certified International Specialist designation, which is based on a learning and development program, to all employees, including couriers, with a more specialized program for managers. Helping employees develop their careers has contributed greatly to a sense of appreciation among DHL employees and an increase in employee engagement.

Also, allowing employees to give feedback through surveys and ongoing reviews makes employees feel involved in the overall success of the company. At DHL, all staff can weigh in on the annual employee survey. Their feedback is often the impetus for improvements.

Encouraging employee participation through CSR efforts are another way that DHL increases employee engagement. Global Volunteer Day gives each DHL facility an opportunity to shape its own social-responsibility outreach programs so that they resonate strongly with their communities.

Support on the personal front

DHL has created a workplace where employees feel comfortable and supported in their careers and personal lives. A work-life assistance program provides confidential support from an external service provider that helps employees and family members manage in difficult times.

In addition, the Family Medical Leave of Absence program extends even to new employees who have been with the company for just two months. New moms get six weeks of paid maternity leave, and both parents enjoy one week of paid leave for baby-bonding.

“It is rewarding to see our respondents give a thumbs-up to all of the benefits that DHL offers, including those that are tied directly to our mission and to our brand,” said Hewitt.

More than 600 DHL Express U.S. employees completed the survey, resulting in a 90 percent confidence level and a margin of error of ± 3.11.
