MEDNAX-Affiliated Anesthesiologist Presents at the 5th ERAS® Society 2017 World Congress in Lyon, France

LIVINGSTON, N.J.--()--MEDNAX, Inc., the national health solutions partner specializing in anesthesiology, neonatology, maternal-fetal medicine, other pediatric services, radiology, and management services, today announced that MEDNAX-affiliated anesthesiologist Richard Pitera, M.D. of American Anesthesiology of New Jersey in Livingston, N.J., recently presented two Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (“ERAS”) research papers at the 5th ERAS® Society 2017 World Congress in Lyon, France.

The mission of the ERAS® Society is to develop perioperative care and improve recovery through research, education, audit and implementation of evidence-based practice. The ERAS® World Congress is a unique occasion that brings together more than 400 distinguished global experts and leaders with the goal of reinforcing patient-centered care. Interdisciplinary debate and a multidisciplinary approach allows experts to share their opinions and discuss with the audience.

Dr. Pitera, together with anesthesia resident, Dr. Ope Popoola, presented the two research papers at the annual event. The papers were derived from the care provided at their practice, which employs 75 anesthesiologists and 25 anesthetists. The first paper focused on the practice’s revolutionary blood utilization program developed by Dr. Mehrdad Rafizadeh, medical director for the practice, which works to treat the patient’s anemia prior to surgery to ensure optimum pre-surgery health. The blood utilization program has resulted in cost savings for hospitals and reduced blood utilization by more than 30 percent.

“Our blood management program has been an integral part of our ERAS® program,” said Dr. Rafizadeh. “It comprises a preoperative anemia clinic and intraoperative reduction of blood loss and recovery of wasted cells for reinfusion. Postoperatively we spend our time and effort to educate the staff on transfusion triggers.”

The second paper focused on the implementation of an ERAS® colorectal surgery program, which has led to an average decrease in hospital length of stay.

“Presenting at the 5th ERAS® Society 2017 World Congress was a true honor,” said Dr. Pitera. “Taking part in this notable event provided us a unique opportunity to learn how other world leaders are providing innovative perioperative patient care, and I am proud to say that we are on par with many of the industry leaders.”
