A CALL TO MEN and The New York Women’s Foundation to Host “Engaging Men – Day of Action” to Mobilize Men to Prevent Violence against New York City Women and Girls

NEW YORK--()--A CALL TO MEN and The New York Women’s Foundation will host Engaging Men – Day of Action where community, civic and organizational leaders, activists, revolutionaries, stakeholders, and influencers will convene to plan and execute strategies to prevent violence and discrimination against all women and girls in New York City.

WHO:

The event will feature keynote presentations by Ana Oliveira, president and CEO of the New York Women’s Foundation, and Tony Porter, CEO of A CALL TO MEN. Community working groups will collaborate on action steps and forge community partnerships. Violence prevention experts will share successes and best practices for engaging men and boys in ending gender-based violence.

The New York Women’s Foundation works with grassroots leaders and organizations across NYC. Their success depends on engaging whole communities. The Day of Action is intended to take concepts and collaborations and turn them into executable plans that will create a more safe and equitable future for the women and girls of our City,” said Ana Oliveira, president and CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation.

WHY:

Domestic violence crime is rising in New York City.

• Domestic violence now accounts for one in every five homicides, and two in every five reported assaults citywide (Source: New York City Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence).

• New York City police respond to 680 domestic violence calls each day (Source: National Organization for Women-NYC).

A CALL TO MEN’s work deconstructs the collective socialization of men and gives men the opportunity to critically analyze how that socialization has impacted their relationships with women and girls,” said Ted Bunch, chief development officer of A CALL TO MEN. “We know that if men embrace a healthy, respectful manhood, many social ills from domestic violence and sexual assault to bullying and discrimination – will drastically decrease.”
