Evoqua’s Vortisand® System Selected for Ivy-League Chilled Water Loop Project

MONTREAL & PITTSBURGH--()--Evoqua today announced its Vortisand® water filtration system has been accepted to the Ivy League… to help a leading institute of higher education with its demanding water needs.

For many years, the Ivy League school has been dedicated to providing higher education and research programs to help develop tomorrow’s leaders. They called on Evoqua’s Vortisand brand to help resolve their chilled water loop & HVAC challenge; incoming water quality was adversely affecting the chiller system and water loop by increasing the potential for fouling, resulting in higher costs and reduced cooling efficiencies.

Water from cooling towers attract and absorb airborne contaminants on a continuous basis. Typically, more than 85% of suspended solids in condenser cooling tower water are smaller than 5 microns. Studies have shown that these fine particles are the adherent contaminants that foul the entire water loop system (including downstream equipment). Removal of fine particles ensures the cooling system operates as designed and at peak efficiency, reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs. It is important to note that these wet environments aid in promoting various forms of bacteria growth, such as Legionella. Both filtration and disinfection methods can help in reducing bacteria growth.

Institutional facilities rely heavily on the quality of their cooling water; creating a comfortable and productive learning environment. A particle analysis test provided a better understanding of the water being in contact with the HVAC system and chiller equipment. The analysis confirmed high levels of fine particles within the customer’s cooling tower water, increasing the threat of inefficient cooling. Maintaining the chiller water system at designed temperatures is critical for the institution, as the cooling system is providing HVAC to the main laboratories, protecting various sensitive research projects. It was clear that a high efficiency filtration system was required to provide submicron filtration performance. Evoqua delivered a fully skidded Vortisand® 700 gpm sidestream filtration system, turning the 1 million US gallon volume once per day. For this educational institute, a clean HVAC and chiller water loop system will help increase the longevity and efficiencies of the equipment, while protecting crucial research projects.

“We’re extremely proud to be involved with this project, helping create a better learning environment for tomorrow’s thought leaders,” said Ken Rodi, President of Evoqua’s Aquatics & Disinfection division. “Our cost effective and reliable treatment systems and services ensure uninterrupted quality of water, enable regulatory and environmental compliance, and prepare customers for next-generation demands.”
