New workout trends in the fitness market

Trends come and go, in fitness as in many other industries. Gyms and fitness centres are changing their offerings in order to accommodate consumers’ busy schedules, tight budgets, and specific fitness needs, bringing significant changes to the health and fitness industry.

One example is bodyweight training. Gym-goers are beginning to forgo traditional weights in favor of bodyweight-only routines. This type of training requires no extra equipment or dedicated exercise space, making it appealing to those who don’t want the cost or time investment of going to the gym. Personal training is also evolving — employment for fitness professionals is expected to increase by 8% between 2014 and 2024, driven in part by millennials adopting affordable group personal training.

HIIT found to decrease aging effects in cells

A new research study has found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can benefit the body on the cellular level. In participants who followed a HIIT routine for 12 weeks, mitochondrial capacity increased by up to 69%, regaining function that had been lost due to normal aging processes.

Other types of exercise were still found to have beneficial effects on the body, such as muscle gain and greater fitness levels, but neither of the others used in the study had the same impact on cells. The HIIT group also gained improved sensitivity to insulin, suggesting that this type of routine could reduce diabetes risk.

Top benefits of fitness trackers

Fitness trackers have taken the health and fitness world by storm, making it easy and sometimes even entertaining to measure and improve one’s overall health and wellbeing. They can help improve not only physical activity, but also diet and sleeping habits.

Benefits of fitness trackers include an easy way to measure calories consumed and burned. Many of these devices have accompanying apps that include food tracking, and can encourage users to make healthier food choices by informing them about the content, quality, and nutritional impact of their diet. If worn to bed, a tracker can also measure sleep activity, giving the user a record of how long and restfully they sleep, and encouraging good habits. Many adults fall short of the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and tracking sleep may help change that. By providing easy access to statistics such as these, fitness trackers can motivate users to continue making progress or motivate them to improve less than stellar statistics.
